Sourcing
Cold northern taiga forests provide the ideal environment for Black Spruce. It belongs to the pine family and grows abundantly across the northern United States, Canada and the Arctic. Its bark is dark grey, thin and scaly, while its needles are short and blue-green.
Black Spruce is a tall, slender tree that typically grows to around 15 metres in height and 50 cm in diameter, although specimens can reach 30 metres with trunks 60 cm thick. The optimal conditions of the taiga forest allow Black Spruce to continue growing and strengthening from one generation to the next.
Black Spruce is harvested primarily for timber, pulp and paper production. Once the spruce has been felled and transported away, our key sourcing partner goes to the site and uses a loader to collect the branches and needles left behind. These otherwise discarded materials are then steam-distilled to produce a powerful and beautiful essential oil.
