Sourcing
Why Kenya?
Cypress trees grow in many parts of the world. By choosing Kenya, we can support communities of small-scale growers in the country’s rural areas while sourcing the highest-quality oil available.

How is it sourced?
Our Cypress essential oil is made from a blend of two cypress species: European cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) and Mexican cypress (Cupressus lusitanica). Using more than one cypress species not only helps make sourcing more sustainable, but can also enhance the quality and beneficial properties of the essential oil. Many growers plant cypress trees as fences, windbreaks or shade trees, with the intention of eventually selling them as timber. However, it can take 20 to 30 years before a tree is ready for sale. In the meantime, the lower branches must be pruned so the tree grows straight enough for timber production. The essential oil is distilled from these lower branches. Interestingly, the oil comes from the leaves rather than from the wood itself.

Mutual Benefits
Cypress is an evergreen tree that typically grows to a height of 12–15 metres. In Kenya, it grows in the Mount Kenya region, where the climate is especially favorable. Cypress was introduced to Kenya centuries ago as a forestry species as part of reforestation initiatives. Because it thrives in the local climate, the government encourages its cultivation. In practice, land in the Mount Kenya region is made available to growers at no cost while they care for the cypress trees and ensure their healthy growth. Growers benefit both from the use of the land and from the shade provided by the cypress trees.
