Sourcing
doTERRA Ginger essential oil is produced through the Co-Impact Sourcing model in Madagascar and Kenya, where we work with hundreds of local smallholder farmers known as "outgrowers".
Ginger is planted in spring and harvested in autumn or winter, depending on when it reaches maturity. The oil is obtained by steam distillation from the underground stem known as the rhizome. On average, between half a kilogram and one kilogram of ginger rhizome is needed to fill one 15 ml bottle of oil. A rhizome is not the same as a root; it is a modified underground stem that continues into the plant's root system. doTERRA Ginger essential oil is unique. While most oil companies distil completely dried rhizomes, our oil is always made from fresh rhizomes shortly after harvest, helping ensure a superior chemical profile and aroma.
