Sourcing
Juniper is a tree species native mainly to countries north of the equator, including Albania, where doTERRA sources its Juniper Berry essential oil.
A single juniper tree can live for up to 200 years. These trees are shrub-like evergreen conifers. Coniferous trees, as their name suggests, are covered with needle-shaped leaves. Because juniper is an evergreen species, it retains its needles throughout the year. This tree species produces male and female flowers on separate plants. The male flowers are small and yellow and generally emerge near the tips of the branches. The female flowers are green at first, then after pollination develop into the purple juniper fruit, or berry. The essential oil is extracted from these berries. The berries are considered ripe when they turn blue. They are then harvested and the oil is extracted from them by steam distillation.
