Petitgrain essential oil is derived from the bitter orange tree, which has a long history of use in traditional health practices. These uses include supporting calm and relaxation and helping to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections. Petitgrain is also widely used in the perfume industry for its fresh, herbaceous aroma. Sourcing
The bitter orange trees used to produce Petitgrain essential oil grow in the central and eastern regions of Paraguay. Petitgrain has been produced in Paraguay for decades, so local producers have extensive experience in distilling high-quality essential oil. By sourcing Petitgrain from Paraguay through the Co-Impact Sourcing initiative, we support development projects in rural communities and help small-scale growers diversify their sources of income.
Petitgrain is derived from the bitter orange tree. Three different essential oils are obtained from the same species: Petitgrain from the leaves and young branches, Neroli from the blossoms, and Bitter Orange essential oil by cold pressing the outer peel of the fruit. Because of the timing of the harvests, the same tree cannot be used to produce all three oils. This is why we source Petitgrain from Paraguay and Neroli from Egypt.
Our Petitgrain is supplied by small-scale growers in Paraguay who cultivate and harvest bitter orange trees on their own land and then distil the oil. For many growers, this is a supplementary source of income: when they need additional money, for example for school fees, they harvest the required parts of the trees, produce the oil and sell it for extra income. The leaves and branches can be harvested twice a year, and by-products from distillation are reused as mulch, as fuel to heat the distillation units, or as animal feed.
