Although Pink Pepper resembles Black Pepper in name and appearance, it actually belongs to the cashew family. Its lightly fruity, peppery aroma gives a milder flavour than Black Pepper essential oil. The ancient Incas regarded the Peruvian pepper tree, also known as the Pink Pepper tree, as sacred and made use of every part of the tree.

Sourcing
The Pink Pepper, or Peruvian pepper tree, is native to northern Peru and grows wild high in the Andes. It can adapt to different soil types. It has been planted in many parts of the world but thrives best in warm, sunny climates. Pink Pepper trees have also grown successfully in Kenya for decades.
The essential oil is extracted from the small berries known as pink peppercorns. Harvesting can be difficult because the trees can grow up to 15 metres tall. Harvesters generally climb the trees to pick the berries or knock them down with sticks and collect them from the ground. The berries are cleaned of leaves and branches and then crushed before distillation. The entire process is completed within 24 hours to obtain as much essential oil as possible.
