In Bulgaria, rose cultivation has a 200-year history, primarily serving the production of essential oil, making Bulgaria one of the world's largest producers of rose oil today. Located adjacent to the Black Sea, Bulgaria offers excellent growing conditions due to its dry, sunny climate and well-drained, sandy soil.
The rose variety cultivated and distilled for doTERRA's rose essential oil is the Damask rose (Latin name: Rosa damascena). Rose bushes are typically planted in the autumn and are ready for harvesting around May or June. Roses prefer sandy, clay-free soil with a sunny, moderately moist climate and mild winters. The essential oil is extracted from the flower petals through steam distillation. The flowers are hand-picked in the early morning hours and distilled later the same day. It is important that the rose petals are distilled on the same day they are harvested to achieve the highest possible yield from the delicate petals.
Even before the first rays of morning sun appear over Bulgaria, harvesters are already diligently working in the fields to collect the delicate petals of Rosa damascena. However, the labor-intensive production process yields a very low output; more than 10,000 freshly picked rose petals are needed to produce a single 5 ml bottle of rose essential oil.
