Sourcing
Sandalwood is a hemiparasitic plant, which means it also relies on the roots of other plants for water and nutrients. It grows on the root systems of other trees and plants until those hosts die, then extends its roots to find another host. Sandalwood usually reaches 4–9 metres in height. The essential oil is obtained from the woody parts by steam distillation, a process that can take up to ten days. The highest concentration of oil is found in the heartwood, the central part of the trunk. Older trees therefore provide higher yields and better-quality oil. It takes at least 15 years for a Sandalwood tree to mature enough for harvesting. Unlike many other woods, Sandalwood can retain its aroma for decades.
