It has been considered a valuable essential oil for centuries and, according to tradition, was used to anoint people of high rank and as an ingredient in Indian Ayurvedic practice. Sourcing
Spikenard grows in the subalpine and alpine regions of the Himalayas in Nepal, China and India. doTERRA sources Spikenard essential oil from Nepal while providing a vital source of income for local harvesters and distillers.
Spikenard is a flowering plant in the valerian family. It grows on Himalayan slopes at elevations of 3000 to 5000 metres. It reaches about one metre in height and produces small, pink, bell-shaped flowers. Spikenard is an endangered plant species, so the amount and frequency of harvesting are restricted. doTERRA sources Spikenard essential oil in accordance with these restrictions. We understand the importance of protecting the plant and want to help preserve it for generations to come. The dark green essential oil is extracted from the rhizome, the underground stem of the plant from which the roots generally grow. The harvest season is typically very short, lasting only 15–20 days. After the rhizomes are dug up, they are cleaned and dried for several days before distillation.
Building supplier capacity in Nepal
