Sourcing
Why Australia?
Melaleuca, or tea tree, is native to Australia. It thrives best in a sunny climate and moist soil. In Australia, tea tree grows from spring through summer and into autumn.
Why Kenya?
Some areas of Kenya offer growing conditions similar to those in Australia, so tea tree also grows abundantly there. By sourcing part of our Tea Tree essential oil from Kenya, we support small-scale growers in the country’s rural regions while continuing to obtain essential oil of the highest quality.
How does sourcing work?
From Australia
Tea tree is a shrub-like evergreen tree. Its essential oil is obtained from the leaves by steam distillation. It was originally used by Aboriginal Australians for health-related purposes, and when World War II broke out, many soldiers in the Australian army took a small bottle of Tea Tree essential oil with them to war. The Australian tea tree plantation that supplies doTERRA is a natural habitat for kangaroos. The trees grow from spring until late autumn and are harvested only during the winter months so that the growing season can be as long as possible. The same trees can be harvested year after year because they begin regenerating just three to six weeks after harvest. Thanks to this sustainable harvesting method, Australian tea tree plantations have continually been able to improve the integrity and fertility of the same farmland throughout their 18 years of operation.
Ensuring environmental stewardship
One of the principles of doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing is environmental stewardship, which means using energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy while minimising waste. Here is how this impacts the areas from which doTERRA sources Tea Tree essential oil:
- No part of the tree goes to waste during the production of Tea Tree essential oil.
- The Tea Tree biomass remaining after steam distillation is returned to the soil in both Australia and Kenya to help suppress weed growth and provide the soil with important nutrients.
