Sourcing
doTERRA sources turmeric from different regions of India and Nepal. The plant is widely used in both countries and is therefore cultivated extensively for the spice market.
Turmeric essential oil comes from the plant’s rhizome, the underground stem from which its roots grow and which is usually dried and ground into spice. Turmeric is sometimes grown as an intercrop alongside corn, sugar cane and other crops. Many growers rotate from several years of sugar cane to turmeric: after removing the cane, turmeric is planted because it helps restore nutrients to the soil. Indian growers also report that turmeric can act as a natural insecticide and fungicide in the soil, and sugar cane planted after turmeric can produce substantially higher yields. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation. After cultivation and harvest, the rhizomes are sorted into different grades. doTERRA Turmeric essential oil is distilled from a blend of dried and fresh turmeric.
