Sourcing
Ylang ylang comes from the island of Nosy Be, off the northwestern coast of Madagascar. Madagascar’s hot, humid climate is highly favourable for the ylang ylang tree.
Ylang ylang trees grow quickly. They can reach up to 12 metres in height, but to make harvesting easier and increase flower yield, the trees are usually pruned so that they do not exceed three metres. The essential oil is obtained by distilling the small flowers that grow on the trees. Ylang ylang trees must grow for three to four years before their flowers can be harvested for the first time, but after that they can continue producing flowers for 30 years or more. Properly cared-for trees can produce up to 10 kg of fresh flowers per year. Mature flowers turn a yellowish shade when they are ready for harvest. Although the flowers grow year-round, the main harvest season runs from April to June, directly after the rainy season. Harvesters, mostly women, pick the flowers by hand in the early morning, when the flowers open and their sweet scent becomes noticeable. The flowers must be distilled within 24 hours of picking, otherwise they lose their aroma and the resulting essential oil yield decreases. Distillation can take 18-24 hours. Because of the significant quantity of flowers needed to produce the oil, the entire process requires a major collective effort.
